Indicating silica gel is silica gel that has been covered with a moisture indicator. It gradually changes colour as it absorbs moisture. The color change indicates when it is time to replace the desiccant.

The most common indicator is cobalt chloride. It is a deep blue color when it is dry and turns to pink as it becomes saturated with moisture.

Typically, this type of desiccant is used for moisture sensitive products that will be inspected regularly. Indicating silica gel should not be used with products that will be consumed due to toxicity levels.

Clay desiccants are made with calcium-rich montmorillonite – a naturally occurring mineral. It is generally the most economical of all the main desiccants.
